John Harrison, UK - 1972 Triumph Street Tracker

The bike is a '72 TR6R, a 4 speed 650 fitted with twin Amals. I bought it 5 years ago as a non-runner with low ape hangers, stainless guards and a horrible seat, because it had the twin downtube frame and a nice tank-I thought I might be able to turn it into a flat tracker. Just like all of us I've wanted an XR 750 since watching "On Any Sunday" & Evel Knievel as a boy. I reckoned a Triumph flattracker would be a good second best. Last year after finding inspiration on your website I bought your seat/fender & a pair of your bars to start my project off. To fit the fender I cut the old loop off the back of the frame, pinched the rails in a bit then fabbed up a new narrower, higher loop which tucks up underneath the fender. I had to fab some new brackets to drop the height of the battery box & to mount a plastic mudguard from Sammy Miller (who also supplied the bicycle speedo). I had one of the period correct Dunlop K70 tyres in stock, & got another from the company that laced the new 18" ally rims onto my (ugly) conical hubs with stainless spokes. It already had the mile style 2 into 1 pipes and I just added a trusty VW beetle tailpipe to it. An oil pressure gauge instead of a light sender & an old Harley 45 horn button are another couple of mods, along with an LED brakelight over the carbon fibre licence plate. A race plate on the front and rattle can stripes to give a competition look & it was done. I needed to swap the original square & horrible sidepanels for a pair of repro round fibreglass ones. It was already black & the swing arm was nickel plated when I got it.

Now, if only it was as reliable as a Yamaha. When it runs it is a blast to ride, light & chuckable & quite fast enough for me. I think I've got the look about right, with the exception of the front brake of course. The fuel tank is too big obviously, but it's a nice tank and I don't think it looks out of place really. I loved your fitting instructions by the way. With best regards, John.
